New Latino journalists in Orlando, Phoenix and Florida’s Treasure Coast
Two Parity Project partner media companies have hired Latino journalists in August 2010:
NAHJ member Arelis Hernandez has been hired as a Breaking News Reporter in the Lake County, Florida bureau of the Orlando Sentinel:
Arelis had previously been a reporter at Diverse: Issues in Higher Education in the Washington, D.C. area. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland and was an NAHJ representative on the 2008 UNITY: Journalists of Color, Inc. student online media project during that year’s convention in Chicago.
The Orlando Sentinel is owned by the Tribune Company and has been a partner in the Parity Project since May 2006.
Hatzel Vela has been hired as a Multimedia Journalist at KNXV-TV ABC 15 in Phoenix:
Hatzel was previously a reporter at WCSC-TV Live 5 in Charleston, South Carolina. He is originally from Nicaragua and is a graduate of Florida International University in Miami, where he grew up.
Hatzel was also a participant in the 2002 NAHJ Latino Reporter newspaper project during that year’s convention in San Diego.
KNXV-TV ABC 15 in Phoenix is owned by the E.W. Scripps Company Broadcast Group and has been a partner in NAHJ’s Parity Project since March 2006.
Zaimarie de Guzman has been hired as a new multimedia journalist for the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers’ YourNews hyperlocal edition.
Zaimarie is a 2010 graduate of Florida International University in Miami. She completed an internship at the Treasure Coast Newspapers during the Summer of 2010. She had previously been an intern with the South Florida News Service. Zaimarie was born in Puerto Rico and speaks fluent Spanish.
The Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers primarily serve Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties along Florida’s Atlantic coast, north of West Palm Beach and south of Daytona Beach.
